TEXTO DE ARTISTA
Hace unos siete años, cuando mi hija estaba pasando por una adolescencia difícil, yo me sentía muy impotente para ayudarla. Empecé a hacer pinturas con forma de escudo que tenían la intención de ofrecerle protección metafísica, como un talismán o un amuleto. Me empecé a interesar en obras de arte creadas para sanar o proteger a un ser querido, como los pergaminos mágicos etíopes, que se encargan cuando un ser querido está enfermo o tiene algún problema particular, como dificultades con un vecino o ¡estar poseído por un demonio! El acto de crear arte pensando en esa persona envía una energía poderosa al mundo. Con este mismo espíritu, he estado haciendo obras de protección desde entonces. Los escudos evolucionaron hacia imágenes más afiladas y agresivas que se asemejan a estrellas en explosión. Los colores brillantes, los patrones llenos de movimiento y los ojos vigilantes tienen la intención de confundir y ahuyentar a los malos espíritus. Las pinturas suelen ser simétricas, lo cual refleja mi constante intención de encontrar equilibrio en mi vida y también en mi trabajo.
En obras más recientes, he comenzado a incorporar recortes para darle a la pieza la capacidad de respirar y para introducir el poder del aire, del viento, de las corrientes. En la tradición artística mexicana, el papel picado representa el aire. El papel picado también se ha usado para ayudar con las dificultades de la vida a través de chamanes que creaban arte a la medida para atender una necesidad específica, ya fuera un problema de salud, una relación complicada, etc. Los orificios en mi obra permiten que fluya el poder sanador del viento, sin perder la fuerza defensiva de la imagen. Los títulos de las pinturas incorporan la fecha en que fueron iniciadas y ofrecen una instantánea de quién era yo en el momento en que comencé la obra. Pinto casi todos los días, así que el poder creativo de la protección fluye hacia el mundo en olas interminables.

Después de obtener una Licenciatura en Bellas Artes (BFA) en Pintura de The Cooper Union en Nueva York, Catherine Colangelo regresó a Houston para dedicarse a su práctica artística. Fue una de las cinco finalistas del Artadia Award – Houston en 2017, recibió las becas Individual Artist Grant Fellowships de la Houston Arts Alliance en 2011 y 2007, y fue finalista del Hunting Prize en 2014 y 2010. La obra de Catherine ha sido presentada en numerosas exposiciones colectivas, así como en recientes exposiciones individuales: Force Field en Front Gallery; Everyday Sorcery y Talismanic en Cindy Lisica Gallery (Houston); Ocular Rhythms en McMurtrey Gallery (Houston); y Sea Change en Conduit Gallery (Dallas).
La obra de Catherine ha sido seleccionada por Rebecca Matalon, curadora del Contemporary Arts Museum Houston; Claire C. Carter, curadora de arte contemporáneo en el Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art; y Bill Arning, exdirector del Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, para su inclusión en New American Paintings, West Issue. Su trabajo también forma parte de colecciones corporativas, entre ellas: Four Seasons Hotel (Abu Dhabi, EAU), Four Seasons Hotel (Houston), Rosewood Abu Dhabi Hotel (Abu Dhabi, EAU), Fidelity Investments (Boston) y Sidley Austin LLP (Houston).

ARTIST STATEMENT
About seven years ago, when my child was going through a difficult adolescence, I felt very powerless to help her. I started making paintings that had a shield shape and were intended to offer metaphysical protection to her, like a talisman or amulet. I became interested in artwork that is intended to heal or protect a loved one, like Ethiopian magic scrolls, which are commissioned when a loved one is sick, or has a particular problem, like having trouble with a neighbor or being possessed by a demon! The act of creating art with that person in mind sends powerful energy out into the world. In this spirit, I have been making protective artwork ever since. The shields evolved into sharper and more aggressive images that resemble exploding stars. Bright colors, busy patterns, and watchful eyes are intended to confuse and scare away bad spirits. The paintings are usually symmetrical, which reflects my ever-present goal of finding balance in my life, as well as in my work.
In more recent work, I have begun to incorporate cut-outs in order to give the work the ability to breathe, and to introduce the power of air, wind, currents. In the Mexican artistic tradition, papel picado represents air. Papel picado has also been used to help with life’s difficulties via shamans who would create custom art to address a specific need, be it a health issue, a troubled relationship, etc. The holes in my work allow the healing power of the wind to flow through, while still maintaining the defensive power of the image. The titles of the paintings incorporate the date when they were started and offer a snapshot in time of who I was at the inception of the work. I paint almost every day, so the creative power of protection is flowing out into the world in never-ending waves.
ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
After earning a BFA in Painting from The Cooper Union in New York, Catherine Colangelo returned to Houston to pursue her art practice. She was one of five finalists for the 2017 Artadia Award – Houston, the recipient of 2011 and 2007 Individual Artist Grant Fellowships from the Houston Arts Alliance, and has been a Hunting Prize finalist in 2014 and 2010. Catherine’s work has been featured in many group exhibits and in the recent solo exhibitions Force Field at Front Gallery, Everyday Sorcery and Talismanic at Cindy Lisica Gallery (Houston), Ocular Rhythms at McMurtrey Gallery (Houston), and Sea Change at Conduit Gallery (Dallas).
Catherine’s work has been selected by Rebecca Matalon, Curator, Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston, Claire C. Carter, Curator of Contemporary Art at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, and Bill Arning, former director of the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston, to be included in New American Paintings, West Issue.
